![]() ![]() You can listen now on all streaming platforms. The album contains vulgar language and inappropriate topics, including drugs, violence, and sex. The Triton Voice believes the album is worth your time, but keep in mind that it isn’t for everyone. Overall, “Awaken, My Love!” is considered Donald Glover’s best musical work and has a 77 out of 100 rating and an 8.5 out of 10 user score on Metacritic. “Terrified” clocks in at 4:15 and is the third most listened to song from the album, only being beaten by the other two songs mentioned above. Smooth R&B elements are scattered throughout behind Gambinos haunting voice and desperate lyrics, including, “I don’t eat fast food, so don’t run too fast.” and, “You can’t run from me” The song keeps more of a slower but heavy pace. It also has slight nods towards fatherhood and the music industry. “Terrified”, the eighth song of the album, Childish Gambino portrays a man who realizes he is in love with a woman and is afraid she will run away from him. Truly another one of my favorite songs of all time and definitely worth a listen. With a bouncy bass line and high pitched vocals, Gambino sets you into his world like no other artist. He is afraid that the efforts he is putting into their relationship won’t pay off. Singing the whole song in falsetto, Gambino sings about being paranoid in his relationship. The album's release was preceded by two lead singles, " Me and Your Mama" and " Redbone". It was released on December 2, 2016, by Glassnote Records. ![]() " Awaken, My Love" is the third studio album by American hip hop recording artist Childish Gambino. “Redbone ”, one of my personal favorites, and the most well known song on the album was heavily influenced by Funkadelic. Listen free to Childish Gambino Awaken, My Love (Me and Your Mama, Have Some Love and more). The song has made a strong case to be my favorite song of all time, so if the album doesn’t excite you, at least give this a listen. He defends himself against the non existing obstacles between him and her, claiming, “They wanna see us falling apart,”. He believes she’s the only one for him and he’s nothing without her, a common theme throughout the album. About 2 minutes into the song, the electric guitar breaks through to the foreground and Gambino explodes with all of his emotions about this woman. It begins with an R&B and soul mix, singing of Gambino falling in love with a woman. “Me and Your Mama” is truly a masterpiece of a song. To highlight a few songs, I’d say “Me and Your Mama”, “Redbone”, and “Terrified” are all ten out of ten. The album consists of 11 songs lasting approximately 50 minutes. The multi talented Gambino strays away from his usual musical endeavors, being widely known as a rapper, and dives into the world of funk, rock, R&B, and soul. Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, released his album “Awaken My Love!” in 2016 and it has stayed with me since middle school. The result is an experiment in time travel: Through sounds of the past, he captures the tensions of the present.Album cover to Childish Gambino’s 4th album, “Awaken, My Love”Īs someone who listens to a lot of music, it is rare for an album to stick with me for more than a month or two. Coming from an artist known for taut wordplay and manically constructed similes, the broad strokes of Awaken are a shift: You’ll think eventually, but mood comes first.Īnd in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests that followed the deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and so many more, Glover’s choice to echo a period in Black music when artists took on an explicitly revolutionary cast is a canny complement to albums like Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly and Solange Knowles’ A Seat at the Table, both of which explored Black identity with new urgency. ![]() It makes for a tonal fluidity that also marks his work on the television show Atlanta, which he created. Like a funhouse mirror, he stretches his influences into weird shapes: The freak-outs are exaggerated to the point of comedy (“Me and Your Mama”) and the ballads romantic to the point of creepy (“Terrified”). Glover said he’d started with childhood memories of his parents playing Funkadelic and The Isley Brothers on the stereo: specific sounds and songs, but more importantly, a general feeling-one that Glover wasn’t quite old enough to grasp. On the face of it, Donald Glover’s “Awaken, My Love!” is a museum-quality rip of early-’70s funk and soul: the faded vocals, the fuzzed-out guitars, the collective sense of chaos and exuberance. ![]()
